CCSD Welcomes Stephen P. Larson as a New Principal on Special Assignment

 

Charleston, SC — Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce and welcome Stephen P. Larson as a Principal on Special Assignment. Larson comes to the District from Broward County Public Schools in Florida where he previously served as principal at Pompano Beach Elementary School from July 2015 until now.

Over the past 20 years, Larson has held a variety of positions in education from coast to coast. In 1997, Larson began his career as a student services manager for Advantage Schools, Inc. in Boston where he was a network manager for all special programs in K-5 elementary schools nation-wide. Following his time in Massachusetts, Larson relocated to Oregon where he served as a special education teacher, vice principal, principal, director of elementary education, director of instructional services, and assistant superintendent/chief academic officer across several school districts in the state.

During his most recent roles as principal and assistant superintendent/chief academic officer, Larson was responsible for developing a comprehensive school improvement plan designed to address persistent failing status; reconstituting instructional staff and support staff; aligning curriculum, instruction and assessment to state standards; setting and resourcing district-wide vision; leading the development and resourcing of a bilingual program model; establishing a principal and school supervision accountability system to ensure continued progress toward district achievement goals; developing achievement benchmarks designed to communicate system effectiveness from kindergarten to post-high school with the school board; designing communication and feedback structures to improve stakeholder perception; developing district equity training programs including restorative justice; leading candidacy preparations for AdvancEd systems accreditation; developing capacity for a district wide implementation of AVID; and establishing new partnerships with community colleges and universities to develop dual credit and dual enrollment programming for students in high school.

Larson has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a specialization in Spanish and a Masters in Special Education from the University of Oregon. He completed his Ed.S. at Portland State University in 2008.

Larson looks forward to using his expertise in executive leadership to motivate and support the Charleston and CCSD community to raise student achievement.
