Young Artists Thrive During the Summer Art Institute

A Summer Art Institute participant works on his sculpture. The Summer Art Institute (SAI) is an educational program presented by Redux Contemporary Art Center in cooperation with Charleston County School District (CCSD) for high school students with talents in the visual arts. This year, after a stringent application process, Redux selected 30 talented high school students to participate in three weeks of intense training in painting, sculpture, and drawing.

Summer Art Institute students increase their painting skills by working with a professional artist. These gifted SAI students have been broken up into three groups of ten students.  Each group has three five-day training sessions covering each of the three disciplines.   The program runs for six hours each day.  The classes are taught by established working artists specially skilled in their medium.  By limiting class sizes, each student is able to receive quality individual instruction from the professional artists.  The students have the opportunity to learn from and develop strong relationships with the artists, and the students will exhibit their artwork in the community.

Students emerge from this unique opportunity as better artists and as young people better equipped to clearly communicate their ideas.  This year, the program runs from June 8-26.  An art opening and reception will be held on Friday, July 10th from 4 to 6pm at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.
