National School Nurse Day - May 8, 2013
Today is National School Nurse Day! (It’s also National Nurses Week, so make sure to thank and honor your favorite nurses.)
We are proud of our CCSD school nurses who promote healthy minds and bodies so that students are better prepared to learn and actively engage in their education. We want to honor all CCSD nurses today, and mention some of the awards they have won this year.
Nurses Barb Balliet of Northwoods Middle, Abbi Beckford of Mt. Zion, Elizabeth "Liz" Brady of Mary Ford, and Mary Cotterill of James B. Edwards were selected as recipients of the Palmetto Gold Award. This prestigious award and scholarship program salutes excellence and commitment to the nursing profession by recognizing 100 nurses from across South Carolina each year. They were honored at the Twelfth Annual Palmetto Gold Gala in Columbia on April 6. Their accomplishments will be featured on the Palmetto Gold website for the entire year. (Pictured: Abbi Beckford, Sherry Huber, and Liz Brady.)
Also, CCSD nursing professionals received two out of the four prestigious awards given at the 32nd Annual School Nurse Conference in Columbia on January 26.
Janet Washington, LPN, received the School Health LPN of the Year Award. Ms. Washington is described as a flexible nurse with a positive attitude, excellent nursing skills and a friendly smile. She has practiced nursing for 33 years and has served CCSD for 12 years. (Pictured: Ms. Washington at the conference, sporting the "crown!")
Melissa Prendergast, RN, received the Dee Dee Chewning School Nurse Administrator Award. The nurses who work with Ms. Prendergast describe her as their greatest advocate and coach, noting that she recognizes their hard work, provides support when needed, and deals with difficult situations fairly and objectively. She has 22 years of school nurse experience and has served as our Director of Nursing Services for the past 14 years.
Nurses in schools serve a critical role in improving public health and ensuring students’ academic success. We applaud and honor you for having a positive effect on the lives of so many. Here's a "shout out" to all CCSD nursing professionals.
