Burke Middle High School Recognizes Students at Academic Banquet 5/31/2013

Administrators, faculty, and parents of students at Burke Middle-High School celebrated high scholastic achievements and good behavior last week at their first ever Academic Banquet.Principal Maurice Cannon Principal Maurice Cannon began the festivities with a poem entitled Rainbow, by Kadeem Middleton. “I see so much color and life in each of you,” Cannon said. In his motivational speech, Cannon borrowed upon on a quote from former South Carolina State Band Director Ronald J. Sargeant, that inspired him when he was in college, “There is no obstacle to the success of Burke-Middle High School. Our goals are to transcend, conquer, and leave nothing to be desired.”

Faculty “wait staff” served the students a three course meal. Richard and XavierLive band, Da’rrell Ravenell and Friends performed, playing songs that were oldies, but goodies along with familiar present day tunes. Audience participation was welcomed and some students provided their own rendition of classic hits.“We finally get to celebrate academic success, which is good for those students who are unable to play sports. Athletics get recognized in a big way, and now those of us who have excelled in school work and behavior are being recognized too.” remarked, sophomore Xavier Curry. His classmate Richard McNeil chimed in, “The banquet is an example of Burke making excellence in academics a priority and a standard.”

Electric SlideStudents from all grade levels were recognized for A and AB Honor Roll, Highest Averages, and being “On Top of Their Game” (a good behavior acknowledgement). According to administrators, there has been an 85% decline in disciplinary problems since the first quarter. As the banquet came to a close Principal Cannon exuded pride as he watched the school gym filled with his faculty and students celebrating the success of the year, dancing the infamous Electric Slide.
