Today, the Charleston County School District and the Preservation Society of Charleston unveiled and dedicated an historic marker in front of James Simons Elementary, commemorating and honoring the 50th anniversary of desegregation in Charleston. Although the marker won’t be placed in the ground until our construction project is finished, we wanted to support the endeavor as yet another important step in recognizing and learning from our past. Thank you to the Preservation Society, Dr. Lisa Herring, Councilman Gregorie and the many community members who supported the event. A special thanks to the former students in attendance, including keynote speaker, Oveta Glover, who—at age 9, along with Gail and Barbara Ford—crossed the threshold of James Simons in pursuit of justice and equity.
