Information Spotlight: CCSD's Title I PAC
What is the Title I Parent Advisory Council?
Charleston County School District’s (CCSD's) Title I Parent Advisory Council (PAC) allows parents to provide input about topics facing Title I schools, and it provides tangible ways for parents to become actively involved in their children's education while serving as ambassadors for positive change. Through the PAC, parents have access to tools designed to assist them in improving students' academic achievement. Participants learn about critical topics including district programs, academic standards, assessments, literacy, technology, child development and partnership opportunities.
Title I PAC & The 2011-2012 Academic Year
Title I PAC is off to an outstanding start this school year! On September 10, over 100 parents and community members from across the district met at the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center—which was generously provided free of charge—in downtown Charleston for a Leadership Academy Training. The Academy provided parents with an overview of Title I legislation, trained school representatives to be actively engaged in their schools’ Title I programs, and encouraged representatives to share the information with other parents.
Kevin Smith, founder of TouchTheStar.com and assistant principal at Charleston County School of the Arts, served as the keynote speaker with a message entitled "Weightlifting: Understanding Your Role.” Other speakers included Dave Spurlock, CCSD team associate for athletics, physical education, health and ROTC, with a presentation on action-based learning, and Cassie Barber, executive director of the SC School Improvement Council, who led a segment entitled “Parents, Find Your Public Voice.”
You & Title I PAC
It's not too late for you to get involved! Additional Title I PAC meetings will be held throughout the school year, beginning with the annual “Parents Right to Know” meeting, which will be held in conjunction with Parent University, on November 12 at Burke Middle and High.
Community members and all parents who have children in Title I schools are invited to participate in these meetings. Throughout the year, information about upcoming events will be sent home to parents at Title I schools. To learn how you can get involved or to request a list of upcoming Title I PAC events, please contact either Margaret Cochran by email or at (843) 579-4819 or Clifford Fulmore by email or at (843) 735-1835.
