Parent University's First Annual Girls Summit
On Saturday, March 10, 2012, Charleston County School District's (CCSD's) Parent University held its first annual Girls Summit at Burke Middle & High School.
The event—modeled after the success of the standing-room-only Boys Summit which just experienced its third successful year—was designed to empower parents with the information and tools they need to raise young women ready for success in the 21st Century.
Over 500 participants from across the county were on-hand to listen to a panel presentation of local professionals with expertise of working with girls and teenagers. Dr. Yvonne Commodore, principal of Lincoln Middle-High, facilitated a parent workshop while girls in grades 1 through 12 attended leadership academies. The event also featured a resource fair comprised of booths representing community and faith-based programs for girls and young women.
