From the Superintendent's Desk - August 19, 2011:

pressconferencespringfieldMy message this week is simple: Welcome back to school, everyone!  CCSD kicked off the school year in style this Tuesday with 40,483 students (not including Child Development programs, which start August 23)—the most students CCSD has had in school on the first day since 1999.  After a long summer, it was great to see schools open and buzzing with activity again.

hootiehootieAll of the classrooms I visited on Tuesday were cheerful, well organized, and ready for students.  It was clear to parents, students, and visitors that teachers were hard at work during the summer and ready to start instruction on day one.

parentsclassroomI want to thank all of our staff, parents, and community partners for helping us prepare for a successful opening.  Many of our veteran educators said it was the smoothest first day and week they had ever seen.  For more on our first week of school, see our new collection of short videos, with clips from my first-day school visits, last weekend’s “Hootie’s Homegrown Roundup,” and our Monday press conference.classroomhootie3

Let’s keep the positive momentum going all year.  Have a great weekend everyone, and we’ll see you back in school on Monday.
