About the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year

Teachers of the Year of the Charleston County School District (CCSD) are selected annually from among approximately 3,500 teachers. Each school names and honors its own Teacher of the Year. School winners are given the opportunity to compete in the district-level competition. Each year, a selection panel scores anonymous applications in order to narrow down the school winners to five finalists considered for the district's Teacher of the Year. These five representatives are known as the Honor Roll Teachers and will be asked to serve for two years on the district’s Teacher Forum. The CCSD Teacher of the Year will serve as the vice-chair for the Teacher Forum and will represent CCSD through the State Teacher of the Year selection process.

CCSD’s newest Teacher of the Year will receive a one-year lease on a new Volvo, compliments of Volvo of Charleston, as well as a $250 award from Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union.  Volvo of Charleston has supported the CCSD Teacher of the Year program for ten consecutive years, and extends support for teachers and students through various opportunities in the schools.

The Event, Rookie Teachers of the Year, and Other Honored Guests

A Rookie Teacher of the Year is chosen every year for each school level (elementary, middle, and high) to recognize the outstanding achievements and performance of new professional educators.  Each participant submitted an application that included an essay on how he or she incorporates data to inform instruction and close the achievement gap.

The evening with the Charleston Riverdogs will include a pre-game picnic during which three Rookie Teachers of the Year will be announced and honored.  Guests from the school district, the College of Charleston, Volvo of Charleston, and each school in the district will be on-hand to honor some of the best teachers in the district.  During the evening, Volvo of Charleston will surprise the CCSD Teacher of the Year with a 2012 Volvo at home plate.
