For the Love of Books-
The 2010 "Reading on the Circle" Event
On Saturday, September 18, the Lowcountry Literacy Roundtable sponsored the "Reading on the Circle" event at Park Circle. Approximately 400 book enthusiasts of all ages attended and celebrated their love for reading. North Charleston Elementary played a huge role in organizing the event that attracted participants from all over the county!
The day featured dynamic presentations, booths and activities, all aimed at promoting the importance of a strong literacy foundation.
The Community of Readers distributed baskets of books and encouraged people to sign a reading pledge. Local authors, media specialists, North Charleston firemen (who brought a fire truck), and local community leaders led storytelling sessions and read aloud from favorite stories. Barnes and Noble Booksellers in North Charleston donated hundreds of books. The Charleston County Bookmobile issued library cards, students from the School of the Arts provided face painting, and readers of all ages had the opportunity to create special bookmarks to commemorate the day.
Special guest readers included Chairman of County Council Teddie Pryor and South Carolina House Representative Seth Whipper. Authors Jonathan Miller, Julie McLaughlin, Alice Cinnante, Lillie Mazyck, and Andrea Weathers were on hand to read and speak with attendees about the writing process. An English for Speakers of Other Languages literacy booth attracted over 100 attendees.
Five Guys and A Burger donated hot dogs, and participants stayed hydrated with water donated by Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and Piggly Wiggly.
