Literacy Improvement Through Strategic Partnerships: The Rotary Reader Program
From the St. James-Santee to the St. Paul regions of the county and from the North area to the coast, CCSD school leadership and teachers are collaborating with business partners, volunteers, and parents to help students improve their literacy skills and develop a lifelong affinity for reading.
One example of this kind of partnership is the Rotary Reader program at Sanders-Clyde Elementary in downtown Charleston. This program began nine years ago as a way to promote the importance of reading. Members of the business community commit to reading to the students once a week, and the school recognizes children who make exceptional gains in literacy. Parents are an important part of the team by working with children on specific skills at home.
