2010-2011 Rookie Teachers of the Year

CCSD's 2010-2011 Rookie Teachers of the YearOn Wednesday, May 18, 2011, the Charleston RiverDogs hosted the annual Charleston County School District (CCSD) "Rookie Teacher of the Year" Celebration.

Each year, each CCSD school has the opportunity to select one "Rookie Teacher of the Year" winner in ongoing efforts to recognize the outstanding achievements and performance of new professional educators. The district-wide "Rookie Teachers of the Year" are selected on the elementary, middle, and high school levels by a panel of veteran teachers.

This year's winners are:

  • Elementary School Level: Emma Rittenbaum, St. James- Santee Elementary
  • Middle School Level: Kara Setzer, ARMS Academy at Morningside Middle
  • High School Level: Gladys Heard, West Ashley High

The "Rookie" recognition is just one step the district takes to ensure that beginning educators will gain accelerated success and effectiveness, as well as greater self-confidence during the first years of their new career. Recognizing that new teachers often face tremendous challenges at the start of their careers, CCSD and the Office of Teacher Employment have implemented the Teacher Induction and Preparation Support (TIPS) program. By coupling TIPS with the ongoing support provided by school-based and learning community leadership, CCSD works to ensure that beginning educators will gain accelerated success and effectiveness, as well as greater self-confidence during the first year of their new career.

To learn more about the “Rookie Teacher of the Year” program, TIPS, and other supports offered by CCSD to beginning teachers, please contact the Office of Teacher Employment by email or at (843) 937-6572.
