Fitness-Focused Mentoring Program & CCSD Students & Teacher Receive National Attention
Did you catch the recent Runner's World article featuring CCSD students and the Run Buddies program?
Run Buddies is a fitness-focused mentoring program of the Louie's Kids organization. Run Buddies provides adult running partners for Charleston County School District (CCSD) students. Featured in the April 2011 Runner's World magazine is an article about Kevin Adcock, a teacher at Military Magnet, and two of his running proteges De'quan and Tre'quan Jones. Louie's Kids is a non-profit organization that raises funds to help treat childhood obesity, which afflicts 25 million American children. Louie's Kids works to find the best treatment options to meet the needs of each child. This strong partner of CCSD has implemented Fit Clubs throughout the district. The tailored and four-month Fit Club program incorporates ongoing support in an after-school environment to fight childhood obesity. The plan includes nutritional education, a daily regimen of physical activity, family engagement, weekly group therapy sessions with a contracted clinician, and meetings at the school for encouragement and support for approximately six hours per week.
