Employee Spotlight: Tracie Horton, School Nurse at A.C. Corcoran Elementary
Tracie Horton, the school nurse at A.C. Corcoran Elementary, will be publicly recognized on Saturday, January 22 for being one of only six candidates across the state considered for the 2011 South Carolina School Nurse of the Year Award.
Each Spring, the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control and the South Carolina Department of Education bestow this honor to a registered nurse who, according to his or her peers, provides outstanding professional services to the school community.
Horton has served as a school nurse for seven years, working to ensure that students are healthy and ready for learning. During her four years at Corcoran, she has coordinated countless initiatives aimed at improving the lives of students, parents, and staff members. She has organized the "Walk To School" program, implemented an after-school walking program for which she earned grant money for pedometers, helped lead the school's focus on healthy eating, and served as the school wellness chairperson.
When asked about the highlight of her job, she expresses the privilege of working with talented and compassionate students. She also shares the joy of working with her colleagues to best benefit children and their intellectual pursuits, stating, "I applaud the staff members for all they do to educate our students."
Horton is described by her principal and other supervisors as a "consummate professional" who brings "a great knowledge base and perspective regarding how to best manage the school clinic." She is well-known for her positive outlook, dedication to her work and school, and commitment to working with community partners.
