Riverfront Race Update
On Thursday, December 16, Charleston County School District (CCSD) joined various partners- including the Cities of Charleston and North Charleston- for a press conference at Military Magnet Academy regarding the 2011 Riverfront Race Festival on January 15, 2011.
The Riverfront Race Festival- made possible through a partnership amongst the Youth Endowment for the Arts, the Charleston Marathon Planning Committee, and CCSD- is an artistic outdoor experience, with proceeds going to support CCSD fine arts programs. This year's event will feature the full Charleston Marathon in addition to half marathon, 10K, 5k, family walk, and bicycle race components.
CCSD schools are an integral part of the races. With the help of a partnership with Goodwill Industries, students are applying their artistic skills to create artwork comprised of recycled materials. The work will be displayed on the barricades used during the various running events, including the marathon. Schools have also "adopted" miles to support the runners, and student groups will line the race route and delight participantsand supporters with their musical talents.
"From drum lines to recycled art, students are learning first-hand about community service and wellness through volunteerism and performance at the weekend’s events,” said CCSD Superintendent Nancy McGinley.
Over 2500 people have already signed up as race participants. This internationally-attended race is a perfect example of how CCSD is working to expand employee and student wellness opportunities.
