2011 Riverfront Race Festival Update: Recycled Art Project
What do old shoes, local schools, the 2011 Charleston Marathon, and Goodwill Industries have to do with one another? They are all part of an innovative recipe for eco-friendly art!
The Charleston County School District (CCSD), Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina, the organizers of the Charleston Marathon and the Riverfront Race Festival, and the College of Charleston's Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art are collaborating to produce delightful, educational, and "green" art for the January 15, 2011 Charleston Marathon and Riverfront Festival event!
Race Goes Green
Inspired by the work of the College of Charleston's Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art Bluesphere project, the Riverfront organizers will be asking CCSD visual arts students for their help in bringing the arts- and an awareness for environmental issues- to the festival. Students will apply their artistic talents to create artwork comprised of recycled materials supplied by Goodwill Industries. The work will be displayed on the barricades used during the various running events, including the marathon.
While designing the artwork and through a partnership with the Halsey, the young artists will study ways to protect, preserve, and responsibly utilize the earth's resources. Through this collaboration, students will study the art of digital artist Chris Jordan, Brazilian photographer Pedro Lobo, and environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck.
Riverfront Race Festival and You!
The Riverfront Race Festival made possible through a partnership amongst the Youth Endowment for the Arts, the Charleston Marathon Planning Committee, and CCSD- is an artistic outdoor experience, with proceeds going to support CCSD fine arts programs. This year's event will feature the full Charleston Marathon in addition to half marathon, 10K, 5k, family walk, and bicycle race components. CCSD music students will be lining the race route to delight participants and supporters.
Become involved with the Charleston Marathon or one of the other 2011 Riverfront Race events! Register as a participant or volunteer. Recycle your unwanted shoes by donating them to your local Goodwill Industries; these items will either be re-used by students or utilized for the art project.
