Teacher of the Month: 2009-2010

Each month of the school year, Superintendent Dr. Nancy J. McGinley surprises one unsuspecting educator as the Charleston County School District (CCSD) "Teacher of the Month." The winner may be any teacher or guidance counselor in any one of CCSD's specialized programs or 77 schools. Below are some commonly asked questions about how you- and your favorite teacher- may become involved in this awards program.

Who May Nominate A Teacher for This Award?

Simply put, anyone! Parents, students, principals, other school personnel, school volunteers, and community members are welcomed and encouraged to complete nomination forms for educators that go up and beyond the call of duty.

How Do I Nominate Someone?

Please complete the nomination form available on the "Teacher of the Month" webpage. You may print this form, complete it with pen or pencil, and fax it to (843) 937-6307. You may also type on the form directly, print it, and fax or email it to the Office of Communications as a PDF document. Each nomination form is considered for three months.

How Are Winners Chosen?

Each month, a committee of CCSD administrators review the nomination forms. These judges look for examples of the teacher's or guidance counselor's enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication. They also are wanting to see evidence of how the educator helps achieve one of the district's three goals (elevates student achievement, closes the achievement gap, or boosts the graduation rate).

What Happens After a Winner is Selected?

Staff members contact the school principal to arrange a secret visit to the program or school, and Board Members and local media outlets are invited to attend. The day of the surprise, the teacher's students and school staff help congratulate the winner. Dr. McGinley presents flowers or a plant, a certificate, and gift certificates donated from local restaurants to the "Teacher of the Month." CCSD's Video Services department is available to tape the surprise, and a short video featuring the honored educator is posted on the "Teacher of the Month" webpage.
