11 CCSD Teachers Selected to 2017 Science P.L.U.S. Institute
The Roper Mountain Science Center recently announced the selection of 11 Charleston County School District (CCSD) teachers to attend its 2017 Science P.L.U.S. Institute hosted at Roper Mountain and Clemson University this summer.
The Institute is funded by an Education Improvement Act grant that was written specifically for Roper Mountain Science Center to educate the state’s public school science teachers in hands-on activities for the classroom, as well as to provide science materials needed to teach those activities. The Institute is presented in a one-week, grade-specific, one-subject format. The hands-on classes emphasize the South Carolina Science Academic Standards, science process skills, and inquiry-based instruction.
Selection for the Institute is made by committee. The committee chooses teachers with a wide range of experience levels, knowing that participants learn from the expertise of their colleagues, and are inspired by their enthusiasm. Priority is given to first-time applicants, especially those from Palmetto Priority Schools and from Title I schools.

“Congratulations to the 11 CCSD Teachers selected to attend the 25th Science P.L.U.S. Institute,” said Rodney Moore, CCSD Science Curriculum Coordinator. “A major goal of the Science P.L.U.S. Institute is to provide teachers the resources needed to do hands-on inquiry based science activities with their students.
Participants from previous Science P.L.U.S. institutes have returned to their classrooms with confidence and renewed enthusiasm for science instruction.”
Participants in the 2017 Institute will receive science supplies worth $1,000 to duplicate lessons learned at the Institute, hands-on science activities to use in the classroom including lesson plans, housing for participants who live an hour or more form the center, optional graduate credit through Furman University, and a network of science colleagues from around the state.
