A proclamation honoring the Laing School Association’s 150th anniversary was read by current Laing Middle School 7th grader, Skylian Johnson, and 8th grader, Zaria Ascue, along with the Chair of the Board, Mrs. Kate Darby, and fellow Board of Trustees member, Mr. Chris Staubes. The proclamation summarized the historical significance of the old Laing School, the first African-American school in South Carolina to be state certified.
Officers and other members of the Laing School Association were in attendance, as well.
North Charleston, West Ashley Career Centers for Advanced Studies
The Board of Trustees established the projected construction dates of these Phase IV (2017-2022) Capital Building Program projects (North Charleston and West Ashley Career Centers for Advanced Studies) as 2020 and 2021, respectively. District staff recommended the North Charleston project to be completed earlier than West Ashley due to the projected condition of Garrett Academy and the timing of construction on the West Ashley campus.
Additionally, the Board of Trustees directed the design of the projects to be accomplished concurrently which will allow for a single solicitation for design with the option of making two separate contract awards.
District 10 Constituent Board Appointment
The board appointed Rodney Lewis to fill a seat on the Constituent District 10 Board that was vacated when former board member, Tamara Avery, resigned prior to the expiration of her term.
Policy GCQF - Dismissal of Professional Staff
This policy addresses the process of dismissal of continuing contract teachers, as well as their appeal rights. Under the policy, these teachers have a right to an appeal hearing before the Board of Trustees. Last year, the legislature amended the law allowing boards to delegate these hearings to a hearing officer, whose ruling would be reviewed by the board. The amendment of the policy reflects that change.
2010-2016 Capital Building Program (Phase III) Sales Tax Budget Reallocation - District Wide Athletic Improvements and Emergency Operations Center (EOC): Reggie McNeil
The Board of Trustees voted 9-0 to reallocate $2.96 million from substantially completed projects toward district-wide athletic improvements at Stall and Baptist Hill High Schools and the District's Emergency Operations Center. The $2.96 million is a portion and/or total amount of the projected balance as of October 2016 for projects that have been identified as savings at this time.
Oceanside Collegiate Academy Agreement Extension
By a vote of 9-0, the CCSD Board of Trustees approved Oceanside’s request to extend their lease and use of the McClellanville Middle School campus for a term of six (6) months with the same terms as the original agreement. The extension changes the lease end date from the last day of December 2016 to the last day of June 2017.
